Weight Loss Secrets

Eat breakfast! Toasted bagel won’t do it. Yogurt and fruit won’t do it. A donut or pastry? You know better. The best breakfast for anyone watching their weight is a hearty, well balanced meal that includes mostly protein, some EFA fats, and healthy carbs.

Squat while you brush. Whether you’re brushing your hair or your teeth, take this time to double task to your advantage. Take these 5 or so minutes to do some squats. With feet shoulder width apart, take the left foot back 2 feet so that you have a sturdy stance. Keep the heel of the back foot raised, put your free hand on your hip or on the countertop for balance, and lower your body as low and comfortably as you can, keeping your back straight. Repeat 7 more times, then switch sides and do 8 reps on the other side. Do as many sets of 8 as you can on each side.

Know your portions. Meats and protein, go for 3 – 4 oz, which is the size of a deck of cards. If you’re ordering a steak that is larger than the palm of your hand, that’s too much for one meal. For your starchy carb (potatoes, rice, pasta), eat 1/2 cup per meal. For your vegetables, go for 1 cup raw or 1/2 cup cooked. And total additional fat for your meal (oil, nuts, avocado) should ideally weigh in at 1 tablespoon, the size of a ping pong ball.

One taboo a week. Give yourself permission to have one taboo food a week as part of the 20% of the 80/20 Rule. What is that one food you can’t have that you think of and occasionally crave? For me, it’s potato chips. For Barbara, my assistant, it’s Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey. Once a week, usually on the weekend, I have a small bag of Boulder Chips. I make it a special occasion, eat it slowly, savor every bite, enjoy it to the fullest, and when I’m done, I’m done. I never have my special treat while I’m preoccupied with a work project. No special snacks while working at the computer, girls! Or watching TV for that matter. The point is to be as fully present with your one moment of indulgence as you can be. Make it the center of your world for 5 minutes. Experience it fully. And when you’re done, that’s it. That’s it. You have it to look forward to next week.
